"A solo show by Imran Hunzai was held at O Art Space Gallery. Imran Hunzai, hails from Hunza, Gilgit Baltistan. Graduated in Sculpture from National College of Arts, Lahore. He has been teaching at well renowned institutions such as NCA and NUST. Imran has been exhibiting his works since 2007 and has participated in over 60 group shows, 8 solos and many residencies, locally as well as internationally.
This exhibition by Imran is engaging and thought provoking. He highlights how humans have taken over natural resources like forests and jungles, to benefit themselves, and have ignored the fact that these jungles/forests are homes to animals. Humans are largely unconcerned about the natural habitat of animals and are only interested in protecting their interests and development.
“Abroginal – inhabiting or existing in a land for the earliest times so far before the arrival of colonists. At times human intelligence goes against nature. With the expansion of industries, human settlements, concrete and leftovers, there are no spaces left for these creatures to survive. Places where animal colonies were settled for thousands of years have completely been transformed into concrete and metal. Wildlife and jungles have shrunk down. The city where I live, most animals like moneys, wild boars and porcupines would come out at night searching for food. We humans, creatures of greatest intelligence and progressing in science, medicine and human development, but end up ignoring the fact that we are not the only living beings on this planet, as our life isn’t isolated, it is knitted with the whole eco system, including other creatures and elements of nature. Demolishing jungles, the residence to other creatures, and displaying those worthy creatures at zoo isn’t a considerable impression. The creation of portraits from industrial materials is a tribute to souls who equally own this planet, this home.”
Imran uses industrial materials, possibly ironically, to create his pieces. Rust free metal mesh and wire has been used to create his piece. Each piece is intrinsically and beautifully crafted. He has paid close attention to detail to make sure that the animals he is creating are close to the real-life animals they are meant as a tribute too.
There is no doubt that Imran’s work is push for everyone to be more conscious and mindful of the choices that they make that directly impact the environment and natural habitat of so many animals. We are sharing our planet with these beautiful creatures, and we owe it to them to keep their homes and habitats safe and intact."
