"A solo show by Affan Baghpati, titled City, Sarota (betel nut cracker) and Surmadani (kohl container) was held at O Art Space. Based out of Karachi, Affan’s focus has been on visual art and art education. He completed his undergraduate in Fine Arts from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. He has been part of numerous shows locally as well as globally.
Affan works with items from different cultures to understand the gaps and disconnections of the present time. “Object making techniques and borrowed imagery are a part of my studio practice. The objects from history and amalgams from the studio – at times valorizing prudishness – are from, but not limited to South Asia. Material culture with non-material culture is one of the recurring ideas in my work. These combinations of various materials are joyful constructs for me, and they provide counter arguments that are contrary and symmetrical to the norms in the socio-politics of today.“
A piece that stands out shows an iron nutcracker, vinyl head, synthetic hair and a brass turban adorns the head. There is something so eye catching about “man” constructed out of almost nothing. It draws the viewer in immediately. Another similar piece shows and iron nutcracker, but also uses brass, copper and resin. This is a more modern version of the man before. Several such pieces can be see where the nutcracker is used as the body. And together several individual pieces like this come together displaying various faces, each full of character and telling his own story. One has a jewelled turban, the other a tin hat, but each has his own personality.
Affan has also done delicate, but wonderfully gorgeous pieces of jewellery, plated in gold. They are detailed and stunning.
Affan’s work is different and distinct. One doesn’t come across such fun and interesting work often. There is so much personality in each one of his pieces that it engages the viewer immediately."
